I'm working on a lap dulcimer for a friend's wife and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get the nitro sanded without sanding through in spots. The thing is full of small, odd-shaped surfaces which makes it more difficult to sand than a guitar. The problem is that I need to recoat with nitro, BUT it's cold out now and I have no place to let it off-gas. So I'm wondering - Is it possible to french polish over nitro? Anyone done it before?
I'm just finishing up the fp on my parlor guitar and really like the look, ability to work inside, and the ability to keep working on problem spots rather than having to recoat like with nitro.

Shellac sticks to pretty much anything, so I think it should work.

Yes but I would sand the nitro lightly with 400p or 600p to start.

So that I am clear on this, I don't know how thick you nito film is but I would put at least 4 body sessions and three glazing sessions FP to build a deep enough shellac film to be repaired in the future as a FP finish. MichaelP38658.399212963

Michael--Do you perhaps mean "400G or 600G"?
The reason I ask is that 400 in a P grit is equiv. to about 200 or less CAMI.

Rats, now I've got this thing sanded down too far

Just kidding, actually I've got it sanded to 400G already. Thanks for the help. I'll post picks when I'm finished. Unless I smash it in frustration....
